Well respected by his peers and community Dr. Jack Demos dedicates himself to helping others
(Harrisburg, PA) An Allegheny County doctor whose passion for helping people is the driving force behind years of providing international volunteer medical services has been named the 2008 recipient of the Pennsylvania Medical Society’s Physician Award for International Voluntary Service.
Jack Demos, MD, a board certified plastic surgeon who joined the Pennsylvania Medical Society in 1981, was chosen for the award after the Pennsylvania Medical Society’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to award him the honor.
Dr. Demos’ international volunteer work extends many years. After accompanying a surgeon friend to help operate on charity cases in the Philippines, Dr. Demos found the experience so gratifying that he continued seeking out chances to help treat the needy in developing countries. In 1994, Dr. Demos created his own nonprofit, volunteer-run organization, Surgicorps International (SI), through which surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, other medical personnel, and lay people travel to many countries to provide and perform plastic and reconstructive, orthopedic, gynecological, and general surgery on a volunteer basis. SI representatives have made numerous trips to countries including Nepal, Tanzania, Peru, Brazil, the Philippines, Guatemala, and Vietnam.
In 2002, Dr. Demos received the Allegheny County Medical Society’s Physician Volunteer Award.
Outside his volunteer work across the globe, Dr. Demos is also active with his state and local plastic surgery societies, and the Allegheny County Medical Society.
The Pennsylvania Medical Society has been working to enhance the patient-doctor relationship since 1848. To learn more about the Pennsylvania Medical Society, visit its Web site at www.pamedsoc.org or its patient Web site at www.myfamilywellness.org.
